From Air to Hair: Memorial Day Reflections from a U.S. Air Force Veteran
RIDGEFIELD, CT — While many across the country attended parades, ate hot dogs and burgers at picnics and honored our fallen heroes this Memorial Day, one U.S. Air Force veteran was enjoying his retirement from service by reflecting on the two decades that proudly wore the uniform.
Mike O’Hara, originally hailing from Bronx, New York, now lives in Danbury and works full-time in Ridgefield hair salon with his life partner, Tami Williams, who owns Hair Couture Salon.
O’Hara served in the U.S. Air Force from 1982-2002 and during that time served in Desert Storm and Desert Shield, as well as in Korea and Sicily.
Now retired, he said that he went “from air to hair” to be closer to the love of his life, Williams. O’Hara said that Memorial Day means that “somebody gave their life and that they put country before family knowing that they may not see their family again— which they didn’t.”
While it may seem odd to some to go from the U.S. Air Force to working the front desk of a hair salon, for O’Hara, his service is a new type— one that gives him great satisfaction not only to himself but to all those he has the pleasure of serving.
“What better job satisfaction than seeing the bright glowing smiles on all the clients when they see the results of their hair?”
“I joined to protect and serve our country,” O’Hara said, “and also to live a structured life, gain an education and career skills. Memorial Day means that somebody gave their life, they put country before family knowing that they may not see their family again in which they didn’t. All those that sacrificed their lives for us is why I’m so proud to be an American.”
In honor of O’Hara’s 20 years since his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Hair Couture Salon is giving service men and women $20 off of any service when they mention the U.S. Air Force slogan, “Aim High.”
